Motivational Interviewing Resources for Clinical Supervisors

OVERVIEW:

- Friday, 08/07/2009, or as soon as registration capacity is met.
Training Pre-requisite:
 1). Participants MUST have completed two full-days of Motivational Interviewing training, namely,  Motivational Interviewing I and Motivational Interviewing II or their equivalent (These events did not have to be sponsored by the Center for EBPs at Case and its affiliates--e.g., Ohio SAMI CCOE, Ohio SE CCOE).
2.) The Center for EBPs at Case will screen registrants to assure appropriateness for this training event.
 
Food Policy:
- Due to constraints set forth by funding policies of the State of Ohio, refreshments will not be provided during the training.
- Feel free to bring your own beverages and/or snacks.

Abstract:
Clinical supervisors who provide meaningful supervision of Motivational Interviewing (MI) skill-development to service-team members must be equipped with some essential tools, including skill-evaluation, clinical feedback, and planning. This workshop is designed for clinical supervisors at organizations that provide services to people diagnosed with severe mental illness and/or co-occurring severe mental illness and substance use disorders. Participants must have prior training and experience in MI (see "pre-requisite" section above). Participants will review MI resources for applicability in their clinical supervision to help service-team members develop MI competencies. This event features large group and small break-out group discussions and practical exercises which facilitate familiarity with available resources and promote action-planning that enhances current supervision strategies.


Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to . . .

1.)  Identify challenges and strategies with integrating Motivational Interviewing into services for people diagnosed with severe mental illness or co-occurring severe mental illness and substance use disorders..


2.)  Identify 3 resources useful in the provision of MI-focused supervision.


3.)  Describe how to employ MI resources in clinical supervision.


4.)  Create a plan outlining next steps in their development of MI-focused supervision.

PRESENTERS:


Jeremy S. Evenden, MSSA, LISW-S, is a consultant and trainer with the Center for Evidence-Based Practices at Case Western Reserve University. In this position, he provides Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) consultation and education (see "Related Stories" and "Recommended Resources" sections below). He is also working with his colleagues on the Ohio Tobacco and Recovery Project in an effort to develop and implement a stage-wise tobacco treatment model for people with severe and persistent mental illness in Ohio.
Prior to joining the Center for EBPs, he worked in community mental health as a case manager, therapist, and clinical supervisor. In this capacity, he obtained experience implementing Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment, Motivational Interviewing, Supported Employment, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Mr. Evenden is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), an international association of trainers in motivational interviewing. He received his undergraduate degree in Social Work from Ohio University in Athens, OH and his graduate degree in Social Administration from the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.




CONTINUING EDUCATION:
The Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) has been approved as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), 8405 Greensboro Drive, Suite 800, McLean, VA 22102. As an IACET Authorized Provider, ODMH offers CEUs for its programs that qualify under IACET guidelines. ODMH is  authorized by IACET to offer _.60    CEUs for this program.


ODMH Continuing Education Committee is an approved provider of Continuing Education for RNs and LPNs for the Ohio Board of Nursing and has awarded 6.0 CE contact hours per OBN003 92-1287CO.


ODMH has been approved as a provider of Continuing Professional Education credit by the Ohio Counselor, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapist Board.  6.0 CPEs have been awarded to Social Workers per RSX088902-1465CO and to Counselors per RCX068915-1454CO.

Ohio SAMI CCOE has obtained approval through the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental health Services Board of Cuyahoga County for 6.0 RCH credits awarded to Chemical Dependency Counselors through the Ohio Board for Chemical Dependency Professionals per
